Review Shopify CSV changes before an update
Compare an untouched product export with an edited CSV. Spot price and SKU changes, included blank cells and option changes without uploading your product data.
Keep an untouched export
Before editing products, export a fresh product CSV from the same Shopify store and keep a copy. Load that untouched export as Original, and the file you intend to import as Edited. The preview compares these files locally; it does not connect to your store or import any changes.
Open Shopify change preview and choose Try before & after examples, or download the original sample and edited sample. These are synthetic practice files, not files to import into your store.
A change report you can check by hand
| CSV record | Product | Field | Original | Edited | Review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | linen-tee | Vendor | Bear Goods | (blank) | Included blank: possible clearing |
| 2 | linen-tee | Price | 18.95 | 20.95 | Price changed |
| 3 | linen-tee | Option1 value | Green | Olive | Option changed; review variant dependencies |
| 5 | tea-tin | SKU | 00130 | 00131 | Identifier changed; leading zeros preserved |
The report shows four changed cells, one possible clearing and one option-value change. Three variant records are matched. The extra image record is excluded from variant matching. The canvas-bag record changes both its SKU and option value, so it appears once in each file's unmatched list instead of being paired by guesswork.
An omitted column is different from an included blank
With Shopify's overwrite option, an included non-required column containing a blank can clear saved data. Leaving that column out can leave the existing value unchanged. The comparison therefore lists omitted columns separately, rather than converting them into blank-cell changes.
Product details are reviewed on the first record of each handle group. A blank Title or Vendor on a later variant record is not automatically a request to clear the product's information. Shopify's field dependencies still matter: a file comparison cannot predict every import effect.
Why some records remain unmatched
The preview starts with an exact product handle and option-value combination. A unique, non-empty SKU can help review an option change within the same product. Duplicate or ambiguous identifiers are held for review. If both the SKU and option values change, there may be no reliable link between the two records.
Unmatched means that a record could not be paired in these files. It does not mean a product will be deleted or that Shopify will create a new variant. Handle changes, partial exports and simultaneous identifier changes need your own review. Image-only records and unsupported fields are outside the comparison's scope.
Finish with an import preflight
Download the complete change report, review the included blanks and option changes, then run the edited file through Shopify import preflight. A comparison can find changes in a file that still contains invalid prices or import errors; these are separate checks.
Use Shopify's own import preview and a small test batch before a large update. A clean comparison is not an import guarantee. The overwrite and option-change guidance was reviewed against Shopify's product CSV documentation on 14 October 2026. BearAtlas is independent of Shopify.
